Train For A New Career With An Electrician Course

Electricity is one of the most important aspects of modern life. We constantly need skilled electricians for both domestic housing and industry. Typically electricians work from technical plans when putting in electrical installations. They also maintain appliances and fix faulty equipment. Approximately three percent of the UK's GNP can be attributed to the electrical industry. So if you're looking to retrain for a new career, an electrical course could be just the thing for you.

Can I Do It?

What characteristics are needed to succeed as an electrician? The work is very practical and hands-on, so you must be good with your hands, and be able to use tools competently. It's important to be able to follow safety guidelines and procedures, so you need to be able to carry out tasks with great precision. You'll need to be able to work independently, and make decisions for yourself. You'll also need a good head for heights, as work isn't always at ground level! And ultimately, anyone looking to start their own business must be focused and motivated.

Make The Move To Self-Employment

The motivation to study for an electrical certification often comes from a desire for self-employment. Without doubt this is proving to be the way forward for many. And as the need for electrical work in peoples' homes continues unabated, it's likely to continue.

Then again, there are those who want the skills as a safety net, to do small jobs alongside their full-time work. Then a smaller number enrol on courses to extend and legalise their DIY electrical skills. Happy clients will sing your praises to all and sundry when you've carried your work out well. So as well as being good at your job, always be polite and friendly - manners really do make a difference.

It's normal for employee electrical workers to put in around a 40 hr week - sometimes with extra overtime. Average salaries in 2009 were around 26K according to SalaryTrack 2009. Domestic electrical contractors in their own business are wise not to stick too rigidly to a 9-5 routine, as they can bring in a great deal more money if they're flexible. Obviously, they have to supply their own tools and transport etc as well.

How Do I Begin?

The two relevant trade certification boards in Great Britain are EAL and City & Guilds. Students training in their teens usually add work experience and NVQs to their C&G exams. They're looking at a number of years before qualifying on this track.

Mature entrants generally study courses in their own time on a partly distance-learning basis. They don't need lengthy NVQ training because they're looking to work in private houses.

Specialised colleges focus on teaching skills that will help students learn what they need in months, not years. Students come out with solid, industry legal electrical qualifications that they can speedily make use of in households anywhere.

So What Would I Learn?

Domestic electrical installation training will generally lead to an EAL qualification. Training will include installations, safety procedures, wiring and rewiring in homes and testing circuits.

Your training will enable you to qualify for Part P - now a legal requirement for all domestic electrical workers. The 17th edition IEE wiring regulations is another requirement for electrical workers. You could also be taught and assessed to carry out various other tasks that together will allow you to complete and self-certify domestic electrical work.

Allow up to about five hundred hours all in to complete your training, which will be a combination of practical workshops and home study.

Create the success that you're looking for by making a start right now.
